2023 Mazda Mazda3

$22,550 | U.S. News Score: 8.6/10

The 2023 Mazda3 is proof that affordable and sporty can coexist in a compact car. Scored near the top of our compact cars ranking, the Mazda3 provides a low starting price, agile handling and a cabin that feels more upscale than you’d expect.

Mazda offers the Mazda3 in sedan and four-door hatchback styles. All Mazda3 models feature an 8.8-inch infotainment system managed with a console-mounted dial. Cloth upholstery comes standard, with synthetic and genuine leather upholstery available.

Mazda3 models with prices under $30,000 feature a 191-horsepower four-cylinder engine. Most models pair the engine with a six-speed automatic transmission, though the Premium trim of the Mazda3 hatchback is available with a six-speed manual.

All models are equipped with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

2023 Honda Civic

$23,750 | U.S. News Score: 8.7/10

Honda offers mainstream models of the Civic with a 158-horsepower four-cylinder or a turbo four-cylinder engine that makes either 180 or 200 horsepower. A continuously variable automatic transmission comes standard on most models, with a six-speed manual available on a few trims.

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid

$27,490 | U.S. News Score: 8.7/10

The Kia Sportage has been around for decades, but 2023 marks the first year for the compact SUV’s hybrid model. Upon its arrival, the 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid shot to the top of our hybrid SUV ranking and won our 2023 Best Hybrid SUV for the Money award.

Powered by a 177-horsepower gasoline engine and electric motor combination, the hybrid crossover earns EPA fuel economy estimates of 42 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway. Those are great numbers for any vehicle, let alone a roomy, five-seat crossover. In addition to outstanding rear-seat legroom, the Sportage Hybrid offers an above-average amount of cargo space.

A $30,000 budget gets you into the Sportage LX model. It comes standard with an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system, a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.

2023 Ford Mustang

$27,770 | U.S. News Score: 9.2/10

2023 marks the last year the Ford Mustang will be on this list. With the more expensive 2024 Mustang on the way, the final sub-$30K model is the 2023 Ford Mustang EcoBoost Fastback.

Fear not in seeing the least expensive Mustang is powered by a four-cylinder engine. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine makes a potent 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. While not as quick as the much more expensive Mustang GT, it’s still enough power to put a smile on your face.

In our sports cars ranking, the 2023 Mustang claims the top spot. Like most four-seat models in the segment, the coupe’s front seats are supportive and comfortable, but its back seat is barely big enough for kids. Unfortunately, a $30,000 budget doesn’t allow you to upgrade the base model’s infotainment system, which has just a 4.2-inch screen.
